Heating Controls

For domestic heating, a programmable thermostat can save you substantial amounts of energy through night setback.

Many retail outlets sell programmable thermostats - you will need to check availability with hardware stores in your area.

What to look for

  • How many different programming periods?--weekday/weekend, weekday/Saturday/Sunday, or 7 days each treated differently?

  • How many different temperature settings per day? (The listed models give a minimum of 4, i.e., wake, day, evening, sleep)

  • The thermostat should also be shipped from the factory with pre-programmed settings.

  • Are you confident to set and use the model of programmable thermostat which you are considering buying?--savings will depend on the settings you enter into it.

Criteria

  1. Programmable thermostats must have at least two different programming periods (for weekday and weekend programming)

  2. At least four possible temperature settings (i.e., wake, day, evening, sleep)

  3. The thermostat should be shipped from the factory with pre-programmed settings

  4. Must meet the EnergyStar criteria.

Programmers may be designed for domestic or commercial buildings.

A full current lists of controls meeting our criteria is included.
