Composting toilets
Composting toilets have two main benefits: they reduce water consumption to near-zero, and they convert human waste into valuable fertiliser in situ instead of sending it to the sewage works to be expensively processed.
They do, however, require periodic attention, to ensure adequate mixing of waste with other organic matter (e.g. sawdust) and to remove the composted product; and ventilation needs to be sufficient to minimise odour problems.
What to look for
- A system which provides sufficient capacity for your needs: undersized units do not function properly.
- If possible, evidence that the product has been successfully used in the province (or, failing that, in a similar climate) for at least a full year.
