Paints criteria
Paints should:
- be free of toxic substances, and
- offgas only very low levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
Paints included in this directory will also meet the Environmentally Preferred Product specification of the US Green Building Council’s LEED for Homes scheme. The paint types in the list below meet our criteria. The first four types produce no VOCs, and can be formulated to eliminate the use of titanium dioxide (which requires an energy-intensive process to produce).
- silicate-based paints for use on masonry and render
- clay-based paints (if formulated to achieve consistent and reliable results)
- traditional limewashes
- casein-based paints for indoor use
- any paint which complies with Green Seal Standard GS-11
